Leslie Nichols Relaxation Program - Leslie Nichols HorsemanshipLeslie Nichols Horsemanship encompasses a broad philosophical and practical spectrum of ideas and methods for working with horses, but the foundation principle that underlies ALL of her horsemanship is that of relaxation of both the horse and handler/rider.

Leslie Nichols has developed a comprehensive and highly successful relaxation program for both the horse and handler/rider. The program goes beyond massage, touch, and breathing exercises by combining: in-hand exercises for the horse and handler in the tradition of classical horsemanship; relationship building groundwork with an emphasis on relaxation; and inter-connective riding exercises that transform both the rider and horse into a harmonious unit hallmarked by quiet communication and a fluid style of travel.

In her work with horses, Leslie developed these exercises, now called The Relaxation Response and Yoga for Horses, to calm horses: some traumatized, some angry; some highly nervous; so that she may reach them with her ideas more readily and more safely. Leslie went on to develop a relaxation program for the handler/rider to complement the changes that were occurring in their horses.

Leslie realized that while there are many philosophies and techniques for training, across all disciplines, there was a significant piece missing and that was relaxation. Leslie Nichols realized that she had developed a methodology that was not only powerful and transformational... but virtually overlooked from many modern training and horsemanship programs.

My horse may be one of the horses Leslie is referring to when she talks about the "challenging" and possibly dangersous horses she worked with early in the evolution of the relaxation technique.

About two years ago I sent a mare to Leslie. She had been started as a western pleasure horse and was abused by her first trainer. Being a sensitive Arabian, her mind was pretty much blown and she was for the most part un-ridable... although was wonderful on the ground. I believe if I had had more confidence under saddle with, she wouldn't have gotten as rattled and afraid as she was.

Anyhow, I looked for about three years before I found a trainer that I believed could help her. I needed somebody that was a relaxed, competent and confident horseperson, but that taught with understanding and compassion... I felt like a too aggressive trainer would absolulely ruin her beyond repair, and a less confident trainer would be afraid of what she "might" do. You see, she had never actually DONE anything other than fold herself in half and totally shut down.

Without a doubt, the most incredible work that I do with people and their horses is to help everyone relax. The relaxation work came out of my work several years ago with a handful of VERY challenging (dangerous!) horses. Now it is the staple of all that I do.

Let's get the conversations started about how to relax horses, why we want them relaxed, the challenges that you may have relaxing when you are with your horse, what you've experienced and more!
