My horse may be one of the horses Leslie is referring to when she talks about the "challenging" and possibly dangersous horses she worked with early in the evolution of the relaxation technique.
About two years ago I sent a mare to Leslie. She had been started as a western pleasure horse and was abused by her first trainer. Being a sensitive Arabian, her mind was pretty much blown and she was for the most part un-ridable... although was wonderful on the ground. I believe if I had had more confidence under saddle with, she wouldn't have gotten as rattled and afraid as she was.
Anyhow, I looked for about three years before I found a trainer that I believed could help her. I needed somebody that was a relaxed, competent and confident horseperson, but that taught with understanding and compassion... I felt like a too aggressive trainer would absolulely ruin her beyond repair, and a less confident trainer would be afraid of what she "might" do. You see, she had never actually DONE anything other than fold herself in half and totally shut down.

At the end of the month, I got back a changed horse. She wasn't fixed entirely, that would have much more time than I could affor. She did have tools in place though that could be used to help her re-focus and not feel like she had to check out and go to her "safe place". Leslie came to my place and worked with us and from there I continued working the same program.
As time went on my horse became less and less anxious and we gradually got to the point where the old haunts of the past just never occurred to either of us.

Without a doubt, the most incredible work that I do with people and their horses is to help everyone relax. The relaxation work came out of my work several years ago with a handful of VERY challenging (dangerous!) horses. Now it is the staple of all that I do.
Let's get the conversations started about how to relax horses, why we want them relaxed, the challenges that you may have relaxing when you are with your horse, what you've experienced and more!

Thanks Leslie, I'm happily surprised to learn I may be doing this mostly correctly. At this time, he won't lick and chew, he grinds and chomps and sticks his tongue out the side of his mouth and chews on it. I think that is a form of brace. He lets me flex and lower his head, but his brace is deep inside.
I'm in far East Mesa by Apache Junction. I'd love it if you'd be in this area some time. I could probably even get a core group of people together for a clinic if you let me know the minimum number of folks you need. Also, let me know if you do 1/1. My e-mail address is 'ibaa@fastq.com'. Thanks again, Leslie, -Sue

The ideas on this page are just a small sampling of my position on horses, and how to best teach this incredible animal. Pick a topic that interests you, or add one of your own, and let's get the discussion started!

If I could sum up my work in one line it is that I am on a mission to find new ways to improve our relationship and our communication with horses. This is the common thread in all of my work.
I welcome any and all ideas, and discussions from you about the time you spend with your horse/s. The more we talk, the more we all learn!
