My experience with Leslie
Jan 16 2009, 7:33 PM EST
My horse may be one of the horses Leslie is referring to when she talks about the "challenging" and possibly dangersous horses she worked with early in the evolution of the relaxation technique.About two years ago I sent a mare to Leslie. She had been started as a western pleasure horse and was abused by her first trainer. Being a sensitive Arabian, her mind was pretty much blown and she was for the most part un-ridable... although was wonderful on the ground. I believe if I had had more confidence under saddle with, she wouldn't have gotten as rattled and afraid as she was. Anyhow, I looked for about three years before I found a trainer that I believed could help her. I needed somebody that was a relaxed, competent and confident horseperson, but that taught with understanding and compassion... I felt like a too aggressive trainer would absolulely ruin her beyond repair, and a less confident trainer would be afraid of what she "might" do. You see, she had never actually DONE anything other than fold herself in half and totally shut down. Do you find this valuable?

So I guess I have to do this in incriments because to the character limits...Anyhow, a friend of mine (acually a customer from the store knew of Leslie and told me about her. I gave her a call and we spoke for HOURS on the phone. I had never met anybody who I shared so many similar thoughts, phylosophies and ideas about regaurding horses... I still haven't to this day. I went and watched Leslie do a demo clinic a few days later and then she came a few days after that and evaluated my horse at my home. I told Leslie everything I knew about the horse and all of her handling. I didn't want any surprises for anybody. That would have done my my horse no good, and would have put Leslie at a disadvantage... not having the right information to develop an effective program for her from the beginning. On the first of the month, I dropped my horse off at Leslie's to a months training... all that my budget would allow. Leslie methodically began the task of figuring out my little mare and what her triggers were, in order to be able to help her deal with her anxiety. She had some passenger work for the first week or so to elimate her having to worry about both a rider on her back and bit in her mouth. She was long lined and later ridden, and gradually convinced that she could focus and work through being nervous. Do you find this valuable? |

At the end of the month, I got back a changed horse. She wasn't fixed entirely, that would have much more time than I could affor. She did have tools in place though that could be used to help her re-focus and not feel like she had to check out and go to her "safe place". Leslie came to my place and worked with us and from there I continued working the same program. As time went on my horse became less and less anxious and we gradually got to the point where the old haunts of the past just never occurred to either of us.
